Immersive Storyteller

Flagship team of storytellers at Video Lab West

You’re an explorer who doesn’t need a map to find your way. You’re a digital wizard who transforms pixels into magic. A blank canvas inspires you. You relish a good story. #RealNews earns your deepest respect, even if you’ve never worked in journalism. And you’re a relentlessly curious person who gets bored with routine (but you’re seriously driven).

Does this sound like you? Read on:

Video Lab West is building a collaborative team of creators to make new forms of visual storytelling. Founded by McClatchy, a modern media company with more than 160 years of journalism excellence, we’ll experiment with purpose to understand where storytelling is headed, equally valuing creative, tech and business pursuits.

We are looking for visual storytellers who constantly want to be stimulated by new ideas. These are people who value the history of journalism yet also look to the future. You’re not reacting to trends; you’re defining what’s next. And you have the grit to realize your vision.

As a full-time employee on our flagship creative team, you’ll deliver nonfiction experiences unlike anything viewers have seen.

Before we tell you more, let’s define what we mean by storyteller. Creating nonfiction content for emerging platforms can’t be done by journalists alone. Storytelling comes from teams, not individuals. And that includes input from our audiences.

We’re looking for people with diverse skills: journalists, designers, developers, producers, videographers, technologists, artists, audio engineers, UX experts, vloggers and more.

Don’t fit in a box? This is the place for you. Don’t fit into one of these categories, but have something extra? Show us what you’d bring to the table.

So, what will you be doing, exactly? You’ll lead the way in inventing new definitions of news and launching brands to reach different audiences.

Technology will drive our strategy, but not our mission. We’ll start by exploiting immersive technologies: augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality and 360 video. We’ll distribute content across platforms, meeting our audiences where they are.

We realize this leaves open a world of possibility, but we want you to help us figure out where to go. We’re going to place a series of small bets, moving quickly in short production sprints, to examine workflows and learn. And we’re not afraid of failing fast before finding success.

You’ll know if you’ve succeeded based on the quality of the work you produce and the impact you make on audiences and tech and media industries.

And you won’t be in it alone. Based at Sacramento Valley Station, Video Lab West will be a destination for journalism and technology communities (from McClatchy and beyond) to collaborate. There’s value in creating a physical space even when what we’re making is virtual. This lets people and new ideas come together to create friction. Some of the best ideas will be created out of that heat.

You’ll bring your own opinions, points of view and experience. But you don’t have to have all the answers. You’ll be part of a scrappy core team, but also part of something much bigger.

Do you want an unparalleled opportunity to be an influential member of a team that’s shaping the future of nonfiction visual storytelling? We’re looking for storytellers to start immediately. Don’t waste time: Apply now.
